چکیده

Incorporation of uranium recovery into wet phosphoric acid (WPA) processes can potentially supplement a significant portion of the world's uranium production and simultaneously benefit human health and environment by reducing radiological and toxic contamination of the phosphate fertilizer products. Liquid-liquid extraction as conventional uranium recovery methods applied in industrial suffers from various processing challenges, such as large consumption of combustible carriers, incomplete demulsification, interference with humic matters and crud formation. The aim of this thesis is to develop novel solid state gel-based materials suitable for recovery of uranium from industrial wet phosphoric acid. The materials developed can serve as the foundation of developing alternative processes to overcome limitations within liquid-liquid extraction for uranium recovery. Two types of materials -magnetic organo-hydrogel and magnetic lyogel were developed and tested to be capable of extracting uranium selectively from the OCP phosphoric acid samples. The materials demonstrated sufficient structural stability, magnetic recoverability, similar uranium uptake performance as liquid-liquid extraction. Compared with magnetic organohydrogel, the lyogel exhibited reduced amount of extractant loss and better recyclability. Therefore, the magnetic lyogel can serve as the foundation on which novel uranium extraction processes to be designed in the future. Thesis Supervisor: T. Alan Hatton Title: Ralph Landau Professor 3

The Recovery of Uraniumfrom Phosphoric Acid

Commercialization of three processes (OPPA, DBPA-TOPO and OPAP) has shown that the DEPA-TOPO process offers the best technology available today for the recovery of uranium from wet-process phosphoric acid. Uranium recovery plants using this process have been successfully operated in the United States, Belgium, Canada and Taiwan. Operating experience from these plants has led to a significant re...

Spectrophotometric Determination of Uranium in Waste Water of Phosphoric Acid and Fertilizer Manufacturing Process

In this study, waste water drains and produced phosphate fertilizers of conventional wet-process (hemihydrate) phosphoric acid and phosphate fertilizer plants were investigated to determine the average uranium contents in the active manufacturing period. The method chosen for the determination of uranium was an extension of an existing spectroanalytical method and was adopted for waste water an...

IMPROVED URANIU!4RECOVERY FROM THE PROCESS STREAMS IN AN ELECTROPLATING FACILITY by

Cylindrical uraniu~ slugs are used as irradiation targets in the production reactors at the Savannah River Plant. These slugs are first chemically etched, nickel plated, encased in aluminum, inspected, and individually pressure tested. An improved process was”developed to recover the uranium from the acidic etching streams by controlling pH and the P(lqto U ratio so that the precipitation of th...

A Study on the Extraction of Cd(II), Co(II) and Ni(II) Ions by Bis(2-ethylhexyl)phosphoric Acid and 2-Thenoyltrifluoroacetone

Keep in mind the importance of cadmium, cobalt and nickel ions as environmentally and economically strategic heavy metals, the application of two acidic extractants, named bis(2-diethylhexyl)phosphoric acid (DEHPA) and 2-thenoyltrifluoroacetone (HTTA), was assessed for the extraction-recovery of these ions from leached solution of spent rechargeable Ni-Cd batteries. The conditions for leach...
